In a thrilling night of boxing, fans were treated to a series of exciting bouts, featuring promising prospects and title contenders, as on yesterday’s fight night: Omar Trinidad (12-0-1, 9 KOs) met Adan Ochoa (12-3, 5 KOs), Rene Santiago (10-3, 5 KOs) was defending his WBO Latino title in a bout with Carlos Ortega (15-6-3, 6 KOs), Derrieck Cuevas (25-1-1, 17 KOs) took on Damian Rodriguez (13-2, 7 KOs) for the WBA Fedecentro super welterweight title and Junior Wright (20-4-1, 17 KOs) fought with Brian Howard (15-6, 12 KOs).
In the first event, after a pretty slow start, Trinidad found his footing and emerged victorious against Ochoa by unanimous decision in a pulsating battle before a packed and energetic crowd at Commerce Casino. The judges scored the bout 80-72, 80-72, and 78-74 in favor of Trinidad, elevating his record.
In the other one in Panama City, Panama, junior flyweight Rene “El Chulo” Santiago fought a grueling bout against Carlos “Aranita” Ortega. Santiago demonstrated his grit, eventually forcing Ortega’s corner to ask the referee to stop the fight in the ninth round to save their fighter from further damage. Santiago retained his WBO Latino title, with the bout ending at 1:28.
In the co-main event, in a really fierce contest for the WBA Fedecentro super welterweight title, reigning champion Derrieck Cuevas showcased his knockout power, landing a devastating right-left combination that put Damian Rodriguez down for the count in the second round.
Lastly, Junior Anthony Wright made quick work of his opponent Brian Howard, earning a knockout victory in the first round. Wright’s powerful display was the perfect exclamation point to an action-packed night of boxing.
