Aloys Junior has explained why he stepped away from boxing for a year despite continuing to train throughout his absence. Junior has not fought since defeating Ellis Zorro by unanimous decision last July. He will return on August 29 at London’s O2 Arena against Mike Perez.

*“I made a conscious decision to go back to real life for a moment,” *Junior said. “I was dealing with personal issues, which caused me to step away.”

The 23-year-old continued training under Ben Davison but said he did not feel mentally ready to compete.

“I've always been in the gym,” he said. “But obviously my mind was pretty bad. I will never step in the ring if I'm not ready to fight.”

Junior says he is now fully focused on Perez before considering potential British, European or world-title opportunities after his comeback.
