Former Super Lightweight Champion Alberto Puello has been struck off the World Boxing Association (WBA) rankings due to the use of prohibited substances prior to his bout with Rolly Romero, the reigning category champion. This announcement follows the resolution by the Nevada Athletic Commission, which, after a hearing, decreed a suspension for Puello until October 5, 2023.

Consequently, Puello will lose his Super Lightweight champion status and can only petition for his reinstatement to the WBA rankings after his suspension concludes. The WBA Championships Committee is in total agreement with the decision handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission, emphasizing its commitment to uphold integrity in the sport of boxing.

The ruling is backed by WBA regulations C.43 and C.45, which provide for the removal of a boxer from the rankings based on the reasons outlined in these articles. Furthermore, rule C.14 stipulates that both boxers and promoters are required to familiarize themselves with and abide by these rules.
