Aaron McKenna believes his IBF middleweight title fight against unbeaten Etinosa Oliha represents both the culmination of years of sacrifice and the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
McKenna will challenge the Italian champion at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday as part of Zuffa Boxing’s first event in Ireland. The 28-year-old says winning a world title in front of Irish supporters would fulfil the ambition he has carried throughout his boxing life.
“It means everything,” McKenna said. “I’ve been saying for years I want to become world champion and I want the biggest fights. Now I’ve finally got the opportunity to do it in front of the Irish fans in my own backyard.”
McKenna entered world-title contention after an impressive victory over former champion Liam Smith in April 2025, but his momentum was slowed by inactivity. He also missed out on a proposed fight with Carlos Adames when the champion was instead matched with Austin Williams.
His journey began when he moved to the United States with his father Fergal and brother Stephen at the age of 16. Training in different American and Mexican gyms exposed him to a wide variety of styles, including aggressive inside fighting, body work and more patient counter-punching approaches.
McKenna believes those experiences have prepared him for Oliha and for the demands of championship boxing. Victory in Dublin would complete his rise from travelling prospect to world champion and open the door to the major fights he has pursued for years.
