Biography
Raphael Akpejiori is an imposing heavyweight whose unusual athletic background helped shape his development as a fighter. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he moved to the United States on a basketball scholarship and later pursued American football before turning to boxing. At 6-foot-8, with a naturally powerful frame, he quickly found a home in the heavyweight division.
Akpejiori had only 14 amateur bouts, going 13-1 with 10 knockouts, but developed through high-level sparring under former world champion Glen Johnson. He shared rounds with elite heavyweights including Filip Hrgović and Bakhodir Jalolov, gaining experience against much more accomplished fighters before building a long amateur résumé.
He turned professional in 2018 and quickly established himself as a dangerous puncher, stopping most of his early opponents inside the first two rounds. His unbeaten run ended against Arslanbek Makhmudov in 2023, when he was dropped three times before being stopped in the second round.
Akpejiori remains an imposing heavyweight because of his combination of size, strength and aggression. He prefers to make his physical presence felt immediately rather than spend long periods establishing his offense, making him a particularly dangerous opponent for fighters who struggle under early pressure.
Technical Overview
Akpejiori is a big, long heavyweight who fights best when he can establish his range early. He uses his height well with a long jab and straight right hand, keeping opponents at the end of his punches rather than standing in front of them. When he gets his feet set, he can generate serious power without needing to load up.
He likes to pressure behind his punches rather than simply walking opponents down. The goal is to push a fighter backward, take away their space and then open up with heavier shots. His size becomes especially effective when he gets an opponent near the ropes, where he can use his reach and physical strength to keep them there and work.
The area he needs to be careful with is his positioning after he throws. He can get a little square and leave himself open when he becomes too aggressive, particularly when trying to finish. A good opponent will look to make him miss, step around him and make him reset rather than standing in front of his power.
For Akpejiori, the blueprint is fairly straightforward: establish the jab, control the distance, make the opponent work to get inside and make every exchange physical. He doesn't need to out-volume opponents; he needs to make his size and power matter. The better he stays balanced while applying pressure, the more dangerous he becomes.
